Event Recap: BYO Books, a Book Club

BYO Books zero waste book club | Zero Waste Chicago

Last year, we launched our book club, BYOBooks, in partnership with Chicago chef and blogger Baguette & Butter. BYOBooks meets quarterly to discuss books on topics ranging from sustainability to food to gardening to - of course - waste.

We held our first meeting at Harold Washing Library in November of 2017. Twelve of you joined us to discuss Michael Pollan’s Food Rules, which offers short, helpful guidelines for incorporating real foods into your daily routine. We had a great discussion about how our relationship with food and cooking was cultivated by our home life growing up, how access to fresh foods and time privilege impacts our ability to follow through on our diet intentions, and even how packaged and processed foods have liberated many people to pursue projects and purposes they otherwise would not have the time to invest in.

We hope you’ll join us for our next BYOBooks meet-up in March. We’ll be discussing Garbology by Edward Humes, a fascinating look into the American trash industry. Copies are still available through Chicago Public Library, or you can check your local used book store! You don’t have to have finished or even read any of the book to join us! Exact date & time of discussion in March will be announced soon. Hope you can join us to chat our favorite topic: waste!
